May 2005 — Filming on Great Bear Lake, NWT
In 2005, after reading
Marie Clements’s Play ‘Burning Vision’, I sent a copy to my brother Dave, with — ‘Hey, this would make a great film!’
Five months later, we were on our way to Deline, NWT, to begin interviewing and filming.
Initially inspired by ‘Burning Vision’ we quickly realized the present day reality of this story. We met
Petr Cizek whose insight, research and mapping contributions were crucial to the making of this film. Our documentary had evolved into a political exposé.
‘Somba Ke — The Money Place’ centers on the history of a Northern Uranium mine, its connection to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cancer deaths of those who worked in the mine and the present day re-opening of the site surprisingly supported by the community.
